Delivering Apps To Any Device Using Application Virtualization at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) use AppsAnywhere as a cost effective alternative to VDI to deliver applications to student devices - on and off campus.
The University's main campus is located in Cantobldanco, a rural area in the northern outskirts of Marid and services over 30,000 students and is home to over 2,000 academic staff.
VDI or Application Virtualization?
UAM faced a familiar problem. How to provide a range of software applications to the student desktop in the most efficient and user friendly way? Early market research suggested that a traditional VDI solution may be the best fit, but further investigation revealed this option could be an expensive way to deliver Windows applications to students, staff and devices.
Application Virtualization was the next obvious solution, but the majority of solutions were not able to virtualize 100% of applications. Moreover, many were not able to virtualize the tricky apps that are used in the University.
Step in Software2's AppsAnywhere, now UAM are able to:
- Deliver apps to the desktop quickly and efficiently
- Reduce logon times and IT administration
- Improve timetabling and asset management
- Reduce software license costs
- Easily support applications on campus for students and staff
- Focus on proactive student support
- Remove the need for multiple and/or large desktop images
- Deliver 100% of their apps virtually with a very small server infrastructure
- ... and all at a fraction of the cost of the original VDI solution!
After reviewing multiple products from major names such as Microsoft, VMware, and Citrix, the team felt that AppsAnywhere is the leader in the software virtualization space, leveraging a unique and patented cloud paging technology for better customization and increased performance.
We're really pleased to work with Software2. They've not only reduced the time for deploying our labs' images (we just deploy the bare operating system), but have also provided us the flexibility to deploy an application to any computer on our campus no matter where it's located or what hardware it has running, in just a few clicks!
Julio Alvarez, UAM
After a short period of time, the team has packaged and deployed over 90% of their software applications and are looking forward to the summer break when they will completely overhaul the campus-wide software provisioning system.
