Improve the student experience
Students want the applications they need to complete their studies, on-demand. Give them what they need and their university experience will be even more awesome.
Tech-savvy students want all their study apps to be there when they need them. We've spoken to our customers about how they've improved the student experience, and here's the top 3 things your university or community college needs to know...
1. Students hate labs (and so do faculty staff).
With impending deadlines the last thing students want to do is try and find a specific room at a set time to get work done. Faculty staff are also struggling to timetable classes to get access to software. Students want all the apps they need to get their work done. They need them to be available quickly and easily whenever they want them... and there's also a whole bunch of benefits to be gained from freeing up labs: reduced hardware costs, reduced IT admin effort installing and re-installing software in lots of rooms, and major 'Green IT' boosts.
2. Students want software. Now.
Generation Y download and install software all the time. On average, GenY students install 2 new apps per device, per month (Gartner, Enders Analysis). So when they turn up to study their course, they now expect your university or community college to provide software in the same way. They expect all the apps they need in an 'app store', they can download and run without any technical know-how. Where we've enabled university app stores with AppsAnywhere, students love university IT.
3. Students want software that works. Now.
If you give a student a CD it's possible they'll never have seen one. They certainly won't know what to do with it and may not even have a drive to run it. If they get stuck who are they going to call? Students expect to access the software they need from the start menu or from an app store. Not only that, they expect to be able to go off campus and offline and continue to use the software they need. Students that have the tools they need to get their work done have a better experience and enhanced outcomes.
The top 5 ways to be an inspiring university IT team
Higher Ed IT teams that have improved the student experience by virtualizing all their apps are awesome! We love to share in their success and here's how you can too.
Taking inspiration and stories from our customers, we've put together 5 simple steps on how to be an awesome higher education IT department...
1. Make students happy
We hear the phrase 'student experience' so much we can forget what it really means. Students enroll in universities for many reasons but mainly to gain a qualification in their chosen field and learn about a more independent way of living. Whatever IT and technology can do to make this easier and less time-consuming, the better for the student.
Students want the tools needed to help them study. Students want to access the applications they need anywhere, anytime and on demand on their own laptop. They don't want to be governed by the confines of lab/room availability or software that runs really slowly. Virtualizing all the applications they need and deploying them through a "University App Store" is the quickest, easiest and most cost-effective way to give students what they need. The app performs as fast as being installed locally.
2. Make university staff happy
Your university colleagues also want to get their work done. Timetabling classes based on lab availability and then waiting 5 minutes for everyone to log on and download software is wasted time. How often do your colleagues leave their workstation unattended while booting up takes 5 to 10 minutes? Improving the way the way the desktop works makes everybody more effective.
3. Be more supportive
Who benefits the most from having a super cool IT team that spend all their time building images, packaging applications and managing an ever-growing server farm? No one. Liberate your IT team so they can be proactive.
Our customers have found that as their teams are spending 75% less time packaging and no longer needed to support and maintain a mega image, they can now spend more time focusing on other important aspects of their IT infrastructure and network, and there's less firefighting. Updates can be scheduled at a time that suits IT and with AppsAnywhere, upgrades and patches can be installed with no impact on the end-user.
4. Go green
One of the major, unexpected benefits universities and colleges have found from using AppsAnywhere to virtualize applications is the improvement in their 'green IT' credentials. The removal of the need for dedicated labs frees up assets in terms of space and hardware, as well as reducing electrical usage by up to 25%. One of our customers saved on production of CDs as high as two Statues of Liberty!
5. Invest $$$ more wisely
At a university or college, software licensing is a major issue (normally dealt with by a team of people). This is mainly because they use such a large number of applications from a huge number of different software vendors. The situation is further complicated by very little standardization with how software is licensed. Number of users, site vs device, concurrent, on-site, off-site, own device, student device, etc.
The ways are almost endless. In collaboration with the universities who use AppsAnywhere, we created a set of reports aimed at making savings around license usage. See what applications are being used and, more importantly, which aren't. So, perhaps you've got some legacy versions of applications that you're paying for, but actually aren't been used at all. Perhaps you've got a site license for some software where a concurrent or user license would be more than enough. AppsAnywhere can help you see this information and help you find areas to save money on your software license estate.
